Bonanza Girl

Author: Patricia Beatty

I Love It!
I loved this book! I've read it so many times I thought I must have a copy. I live in Idaho and I enjoy reading about places I've been to here in the northwest. It's an intriguing tale good for the young and the young at heart. The book is about a family who moves to Northern Idaho so the mother can teach in a mining camp. the problem is, there are no schools. So, along with a large Swedish woman, a thin Irish man, and two spunky kids, she sets up a restaurant. I wonderful story everyone can enjoy!

Fun history of the early northwest.
I first read this book in 4th grade and reread it several times in one year. I can remember telling my mom all about it because it was based in the Northwest. I loved the way the family worked together to give their mom a deserved surprise. I recently found another book by the author and was reminded of my love for this book. I hope I can find a copy to read to my children and let them enjoy the fun.

The Boys of Boise: Furor, Vice & Folly in an American City (Columbia Northwest Classics)
Published in Paperback by University of Washington Press (June, 2003)
Authors: Peter Boag and John G. Gerassi
Average review score:

An Alternative Lifestyler's Must Read Book
The Boys of Boise is one of those books that anyone interested in understanding the issues besetting those living an alternative lifestyle must read.

John Gerassi writes an editorial history of a series of politically motivated arrests and harrassments of those in the homosexual community in Boise, Idaho in 1955. Gerassi writes from a mid-1960s perspective in the midst of the sexual revolution looking back on a different perspective when homosexuality was even less accepted than it was in the 1960s.

The book explores several issues as they impacted a prosecution of a given portion of the homosexual population: community politics, the input and influence of a religous community (in Boise - the LDS), the role of the popular local press, a grab for power by those outside the main community power structure, the role of law enforcement and the courts.

Why is this book a must read for understanding issues facing those living alternative lifestyles today? The events covered could happen in any community today - to those who are exploring poly relationships, BDSM, and Gor - as well as to those who continue to simply live within the Gay community. There are laws on our books in each state and locale that could be discriminatively enforced to bring problems to individuals or groups - in violation of protections they believe they have under the Bill of Rights.

The only possible negative in the book - and for some it is not a negative - is the amount of space devoted to reproducing the entirety of court dialogs and certain other primary sources. While I personally enjoyed having the sources there - other historians would prefer they be relegated to either appendices or simply referenced and summarized. It should be noted that when Gerassi wrote this book - he was a reporter/editor for a news periodical rather than a university professor.

The book definitely belongs in the library of scholars devoted to Urban studies, gay studies, the sociology of alternative lifestyles and the like.

Classic American journalism
From 1955 to 1957, Boise, Idaho, was caught in the grip of a full-blown Gay panic that made national headlines and gave Idaho's judicial system a black eye. This study of the panic, published in 1965, is both of its time and decades ahead of it. Gerassi brilliantly dissects the (chiefly economic) motives of people involved in promoting and prosecuting the scandal. He also displays a sharp eye for character and incidental detail.

A must-read for anyone interested in GLBT history, and also a classic piece of investigative journalism, Gerassi's book is an astonishing piece of work. (Neil Miller covers a similar scandal in Sioux City, IA, with the somewhat inferior _Sex Crime Panic_.)

The Devil's Cup: A History of the World According to Coffee
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (Trd Pap) (04 March, 2003)
Author: Stewart Lee Allen
Average review score:

As Good as the Perfect Espresso..!
It's brief, rich, flavory, cheery, and mind alerting.

Stewart Lee Allen takes you along a wonderful trip around the world. In light and easy prose, you get all the information you want on the history of coffee and coffeecentric theories gathered from real serious research. But he takes away the seriousness and the graveness and actually makes you smile all the way.

This book is as sweet as coffee itself
Believe it or not while I was reading this book I was completely transfered into another world, into another time. Thanks to the writers talent I was enjoying being there and learn the story of coffee and so many others things.I have tried my best to read this book as slowly as I could but that was impossible as I have finished it just in one day.God,it was such a pleasant read and that was amazing because I found it hard to believe that there is a non-fiction book to be finished just in a few hours. Reading this book is magic - Having this book in your bookshelf is having an expensive souvenir and you must know that if this book weights 200 grams is worth 200 billion dollars! Because it is a story of something that is part of the life and that's of course COFFEE that we use three or more times a day. Isn't it a shame to drink Coffee and not knowing its history???

Doggie Doings : A Complete Reference for Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Teton Valley, Idaho

Excellent Book for our trip to Jackson Hole w/our dogs
Imagine piling into the car with 4 kids, luggage and 3 dogs for your next vacation and not having any idea as to what you can do with the dogs once you get there. That was us last summer, heading off to Jackson Hole, and had it not been for this book which was refered to us by another friend, we would have never taken our dogs with us. It explains where good areas our to take your dogs, what to expect if you run into wildlife...bears etc. We never did, but we were prepared thanks to this book. The author did a wonderful job of reasearching all the valuable information in this book. Becuase of the information in this book, the whole family, from the kids tro the pets had a great time. If you are planning a trip to the Jackson Hole area with your pet, this is a MUST read before, and during your trip!!!

World Class Info for a World Class Spot
Does your dog dislike being left alone? More importantly, do you have a hard time leaving your dog, even for world-class travel destinations? Whether you are a would-be traveler to Jackson Hole Wyoming, or a local with a dog, this book will help and inspire you. "Doggy Doings" is, as the title says, a complete reference of information you will find nowhere else. There are chapters that will give you specific and immediately useful information such as where you can go hiking with your dog. For some reason, I particularly enjoyed the chapters with more "surprising" information: chapters that offered the kind of tidbits you like to think you never will need -- such as what to do if you and your dog encounter large wild animals -- bears or moose. The chapter on dealing with any type of emergency made for suspenseful reading. In all likelihood, most of us never will encounter those situations: the majority of the book deals with all the pleasures that you and your dog hope to find and can expect to find in one of the most beautiful spots on earth. This book, like the area it describes and helps you to access, is truly one of a kind. I highly recommend it and wish there were one like it for every area of the country. I liked how the book took into acount and reached for a true community of people, environment and animals. You will both enjoy and use this book.

Excellent guide for Bitterroot Hikers & Backpackers
Hiking The Bitterroots helped me to explore new trails and see new sites in my area, armed with the knowledge of what might lay over that next hill. Includes trail details such as recommended fishing & camping sites, scenery, milage, elevations, driving directions, and how often the trail is used. Very helpful for someone new to the area and does not know where to begin hiking in the Bitterroot forests and wilderness.

Get Up and Go!
Mort Arkava's "Hiking the Bitterroots" is a definite winner with "rec heads" locally and otherwise.

His book leads you to the trailheads of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness of Montana and Idaho with it's pristine forests, rushing creeks, alpine meadows and towering peaks.

Each of the 41 hikes varies in length as well as endurance. Each hike's description is accurate as well as descriptive and detailed. Mort provides you with trailhead directions, trail descriptions and sketch maps. You know that Arkava has hiked every trail more than once.

He has made it easy for beginners and experts alike to get out there and explore. So let's go! Let's get out there! And don't forget your moleskin, your extra pair of socks and of course, "Hiking the Bitterroots" by Mort Arkava.

Hiking the Wasatch
Published in Paperback by Treasure Chest Publications (June, 1988)
Author: John Veranth
Average review score:

Great resource for Salt Lake City outdoors
This is by far the most detailed hiking guide to the Wasatch I have come across. It covers a good range of difficulties, from easy hikes to mountaineering scrambles. Has much more detail than books that cover the entire state of Utah. I recently moved to SLC and have been using this book consistently. I find that hike descriptions given in the book match reality in almost all cases for me which is not the case with some other similar books (especially hiking times).

An Absolute Must For Anyone interested in Hiking The Wasatch
John Veranth's book, Hiking The Wasatch, is the greatest work ever written for people who hike in the Salt Lake County Area of the Wasatch. It covers everything from easy family hikes to challenging ridge and mountaineering scrambles for the most experienced hiker. It includes great route descriptions, moderate hike times, trailhead locations, geological information, and historical references. There are other books that cover Wasatch Front Hiking, but only Veranth's book is a complete guide. I enjoyed this book, because it helped me accomplish my goal of climbing all of Salt Lake County's 32 10,000-foot peaks. If you enjoy peak-bagging, check out "Climbing Salt Lake County's 32 10,000-foot Peaks" by James Barlow, and Keith Stevens. His book is better than "Climbing...Peaks", because it also includes trails that are not routes up these peaks. It also has sections for the Foothills, Milcreek Canyon (North Side), and North & East Areas, where the peak-bagging book doesn't mention, due to lack of peaks. All the peaks are accessed from Big Cottonwood, Little Cottonwood, American Fork, or Milcreek (South Side). It also goes into much greater detail than Michael R Kelsey's "Utah Mountaineering Guide", and David Hall's "Hiking Utah", because it focuses just on the Salt Lake County section of the Wasatch, not the entire Range, or State of Utah. In the end, it is the Bible of general hiking in the Wasatch Range.

Home Below Hell's Canyon
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (June, 2003)
Author: Grace Jordan
Average review score:

Great Period Piece
Like Douglas's "Of Men and Mountains", this book evokes a wonderful but challenging earlier period. In addition to giving a great sense of homesteading, the books gives a beautiful sense of the family, and the people who comprised their community.

Wonderful book
This is a terrific personal account of life in Hell's Canyon. It allows the read to vicariously live through the writer, who has a special ability to capture the reader's heart. Raising sheep on the hills of Hell's Canyon and enduring isolation for long stretches must have been hard, and the writer details it well. We also come to learn why she loved it.

Idaho the Whitewater State
Published in Paperback by Watershed Books (June, 2003)
Authors: Grant Amaral, Laura Andrews, Doug Ammons, and Mary Williams
Average review score:

This Book is the Bible for Kayaking in Idaho
The only book you should even consider buying for paddling Idaho. The only negative is that grant seems to under estimate some of the shuttles. Watch out for that.

If you want to boat in Idaho you need this book !
This book is as complete as you can find when it comes to Idaho White Water. Grant Amaral has done an outstanding job with this guide. Buy it, you won't be sorry. As a matter of fact, you will be sorry if you don't because there is no other like it.
